Discover Your Family History

If you are interested in genealogy, you won’t want to miss this workshop on Ancestry.com, library edition.  Ancestry is one of the most powerful resources for family history research that exists, and learning how to use it well, will help you not only with Ancestry, but with similar genealogy resources.  This 90-minute workshop, led by librarian Nancy McColm, will explore the types of information Ancestry holds, and provide search tips, and hands-on practice.   Registration is required, as space is limited.
 

Shots in the Dark – Author Talk

Join us Tuesday, October 8th at 7pm for an author talk with Daniel Zimmerman as he discusses his book, Shots in the Dark. Daniel will read segments from the book followed by several ‘how I did it’ stories. He will wraps up his talk with a Q&A.
 
Shots in the Dark will be on sale from Belmont Books the night of the event.

Author Bio: Daniel Zimmerman is married with a grown daughter and two young grandchildren. He lives in North Reading but prior to that, resided in Norwood for 50 years. He spent 25 years in EMS as an EMT/911 dispatcher before changing careers. He currently works for a major gas utility. His writing background includes 20 years as a newspaper stringer covering high school sports.

Friends Author Talk – Young Castro

Author Jonathan Hansen will join us Thursday, September 12 at 7pm in the Assembly Room to discuss his latest book, Young Castro

Richard Bustamante, writing for the Washington Post, calls Hansen’s biography of Fidel Castro, “a fresh, deeply researched appraisal of his life….” and a reintroduction to “Castro before he became the liberator/despot we thought we knew.”

We have a few more Moon Memories to share, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Lunar Landing. 

Chemist and teacher Jim Roth discusses his work on the Apollo program, and his volunteer work with the Massachusetts Lions’ Eye Research Fund, and the Belmont Conservation Commission

Musician Sandra Rosenblum shares what it was like to experience the lunar landing while on a trip abroad, and how her daughter’s career was influenced by the “space race.” 

Local artist Ottavio Forte discusses his time working as an electrical engineer on the Apollo 11 program, and his hobbies – beekeeping, wine making, and sculpting.

Friends’ Space Series

This program will introduce you to the exploration of the Red planet from the beginning with Percival Lowell’s drawings of canals on Mars to HG Wells War of the Worlds, and into the modern era with NASA & ESA orbiting spacecraft, landers, and rovers! It will even cover future landers and orbiting space craft.

Exoplanets Around Other Stars
Wednesday, August 14th at 7pm, Assembly Room

Learn how the latest satellites are finding planets around our neighboring stars, and be amazed at the incredible variety and numbers of planets found among them. Discover how NASA and the ESA plans to explore those newfound planets with the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Chocolate Making for Teens and Tweens!

Tuesday, August 6, join us in the Assembly Room for Chocolate Making for Teens and Tweens! Learn the sweet ins and outs of making chocolate and take some treats home with you! Licensed Chocolatier Kim Larkin will lead this awesome workshop on the history and techniques involved in making our favorite candy, and lead attendees in making their own.
