This policy governs the use of materials housed in the Library’s Special Collections area, known as the Underwood Room. The collection includes Town Annual Reports, Resident Lists, works by Belmont authors, historical vital records, public documents, and other items of historical significance to the Town of Belmont. The Library has an inventory of items held in the Underwood Room. It may be viewed in the room, and is also available on our website.
Patrons are welcome to browse the visible, locked collections. Staff will retrieve items upon request, and may ask patrons to wear archival gloves while handling materials. These gloves will be supplied by Library staff. Access may be restricted if an item is deemed too fragile for handling. When available, microfilm or digital copies may be substituted. Use may be denied if improper handling techniques are demonstrated.
The Underwood Room may be reserved in accordance with the Library’s Meeting Room Policy. The Underwood room has a security camera in place to ensure the safety of the collection, and those using the room.
