Study Buddies

Need an extra hand keeping your child’s brain busy this summer? Students in Belmont entering Grades 1-6 can request a free volunteer tutor as part of Belmont Public Library’s growing initiative to create an environment for lifelong learning. Each registered student will be paired with a volunteer from the high school to practice reading, math, science, and whatever other school subjects they need assistance with once a week for as many weeks as they need during the summer.

To register, fill out the form here to begin the matching process.

How does tutoring over Zoom work?

Your librarian will help you schedule a date and time for a 1-hour weekly session with your tutor. Once a time has been decided, you will be sent a Zoom link for your meeting. At the beginning of your session, you will be greeted by the librarian and sent to a Breakout Room where your tutor will be waiting. In each session, your child’s tutor will go through worksheets, activities, and reading projects to help your child grow and maintain the skills they learned over the year. The supervising librarian will do regular check-ins on the Breakout Rooms to make sure things are going smoothly and help resolve any tech issues.

Will my student get the same tutor every week?

The schedule will depend on your tutor’s availability each week. The librarian will help you create a schedule that will work best for both participants.

Can a parent hire a Study Buddies’ tutor?

All tutoring done for Study Buddies is free-of-charge. If a parent would like to hire a tutor who is part of the program, they can email Hannah Lee, the YA Services Librarian, at [email protected], and ask whether that tutor offers more services.

What if I have more questions?

Our YA Services Librarian, Hannah Lee, can answer any questions you might have. You can contact them via email at [email protected] or by calling 617-993-2873.
